Lin & Lin Gallery is pleased to present Hsu Chun-Yu's metal wire sculptures exhibition Postures of Presence: Everyday in Lines in July. The artist burns, hammers, and bends metal wires to depict figures and their dynamic postures, which are common in everyday life. The flowing lines interlace with the dark shadows projected on the blank wooden boards, causing the lines of varying thicknesses to overlap as the light and shadow change, and the moments of ordinary people's "presence" to emerge one by one, presenting a real and subtle scene of life, as well as demonstrating the artist's gaze and perception of the various of life.
"These sculptures are nameless and also without stories.
They are not the dramatic protagonists, but rather the most common and easily overlooked beings around us."
──Hsu Chun-Yu
"Figures made of curved and overlapped metal wires" and "gathering people" are distinctive features in Hsu's works. She demonstrates her mastery of the medium through the delicate portrayal of figures and scenes, and the use of smooth and flexible lines that respond to the aesthetic pursuit of possessing both substance and essence in traditional oriental painting and calligraphy lines. In the figures, Hsu bends and overlaps flat wires of different widths back and forth, depicting the rough outlines of the figures, postures, and wrinkled details. On the other hand, in the strong contrast of light and shadow, the winding wires intertwined and extended beyond the screen, creating a dynamic between the wires and space. When the light shines on the sculpture's openwork, it fills in the outline and adds emotions, also presenting a variety of emotions and atmospheres as the audience moves around. Furthermore, the overlap of dark wire lines and grey shadows create a rich visual depth while generating a sense of presence in time and space, echoing the true state of "people in the social field."
The works in this exhibition, which appear to be images of records about common people in wire lines, are actually a metaphor for the "postures" of ordinary people adjusting their roles and finding their places in society. These sculptures not only show the painting's brushwork, but also the space and structure of itself. Its transparent and open form of expression leads the audience to the line movement and immerses them in the scenario and rhythm of each individual figure. While watching, we gaze at these unknown but real people in the social area, thus evoking a deep resonance with the existence of the other and one's own position in the real society.
