Biography
Hsu Chun-Yu uses copper and iron wires, which she burns, hammers, and bends by hand, to record people and phenomena overlooked by a busy society, and in the process of transforming the image into a three-dimensional figure sculpture, she realizes other people's life experiences. Hsu takes various “char-acters” in the society as the main theme of work, and uses lines to organize the relationship between self and others, thus gradually shifting her focus from the self to gazing at the surroundings. In order to find more different lifestyles and social scenes, she takes a forward step to record people's stories actively.
As the metal wires are connected, they are curved, intertwined, and overlapped into the layer after layer of the figure's shape and wrinkles. Under the lines and blank space, the figure's features are gradually revealed. As the light shines on the sculpture, the flowing lines interact with the dark shadows projected on the blank wooden boards, and the openwork's silhouette complements the light and shadow. The overlap of dark wire lines and grey shadows creates a rich visual depth, and also adds emotions to it, presenting a variety of emotions and atmospheres as the audience moves around. The artist uses the space and structure of the sculpture, which are transparent and open forms of expression, leading the audiences to the line movement and immersing them in the scenario and rhythm of each individual fig-ure, and gazing and perceiving these real and important “people” who are used to in our lives in society.
