"There is a need to listen attentively to the place where we live, as well as a need to organize the features of the soundscape of our everyday lives. The way and state in which we perceive sound are always overlooked." — Wu Tsan-Cheng
Lin & Lin Gallery is honored to announce Wu Tsan-Cheng's solo exhibition Where Are You ? On the Way. which will be presented in August. For the last ten years, Wu has contemplated sound and experimented with its possibilities. He has said, "By listening carefully, fragments of memories are called forth and reorganized. Attentive listening can happen anywhere, and the soundscape of our lives will be a focus of future archaeology." The artist will present Taiwan Sound Map Project, along with its derivative works Coastline 002 and Waterfall 002, and his two manuscript-style works Track and Voyage of Time.
The artist started Taiwan Sound Map Project in 2011 and intends to finish it in December of 2021. For the project, he records sounds that we are accustomed to hearing in cities, towns and natural environments by walking through or standing still in these places. He then combines various sound elements to create simulations of sound in our daily lives, thus layering the fluid characteristics of the audio culture in each place. His recordings are not purely objective documentations due to his collection method and paradoxical process. The result is sound art that continually penetrates the body, stimulates the opening of bodily perceptions, and shapes or reflects individual subjective imagination.
In addition to recording the Taiwan soundscape, Wu has started considering how his recorded collections can be developed into other creative projects. His conceptual installations Coastline 002 and Waterfall 002 are presented in a single venue such that their sounds flow together and produce dialogues. The human senses cannot easily separate the parallel videos and soundtracks, as both have perceptible and imperceptible, prophetic and foreboding, or unaligned and asynchronous elements. The senses react in a multitude of ways, but the important thing is our experiential and experimental perceptions.
Wu has created two new works for the exhibition, Track and Voyage of Time, which are based on photographs that he painted or wrote on.Track supplements the dynamic elements of different coastlines with static images that offer an onsite record of bodily listening and observations. Voyage of Time features the artist's regular writing habit, which had been long-delayed. For the work, Wu quickly wrote some thoughts about sound in illegible handwriting. However, when later trying to recall what he had written, it seemed that the missing parts were unimportant because trying to recall the fragments after a period of time made constructing more precise sound concepts possible. Wu repeated the process, but by entering the words into a computer. He then repeatedly asked himself clear questions over a short period of time, which sometimes resulted in extremely confusing words. Logic or emotion intervenes which is sometimes clear and sometimes contradictory. Thoughts are continually strung together and printed out, which are then copied in a mirror image by hand by the artist. This manuscript-style work is created through this kind of transformation and presented at the exhibition.
Wu Tsan-Cheng was born in Yunlin, Taiwan on 1973. He graduated from Tainan National University of the Arts, Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts. Wu enjoys listening to popular and experimental music. The sound processing used in Jean-Luc Godard's films made him realize that symbols and messages can be embedded in sounds to create powerful effects. The subtle attraction of sound and image, or sound and touch, has caused Wu to listen carefully to sound and face its many possibilities.
