Lin & Lin Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition Floating World by contemporary Japanese artist Yuki Sakuta in April. Sakuta's artworks are based on things that remain in her heart, such as fairy tales, myths, novels, and music she heard a long time ago. For this exhibition, the artist drew inspiration from Gabriel García Márquez's novel (One Hundred Years of Solitude), and the short story (La hojarasca). She picked up the detailed realism and fantasy sentences, obscure words, and the personality of the characters in the stories, and expressed mental landscape of the people, or scenery that they might have seen in abstract silhouettes of trees and flowers.

There are more than 6,000 languages in the world.
I feel that the earth is a forest full of words.


Yuki Sakuta's works are paintings of trees or flowers, which are puzzles that shape the world, the emotions, and the characters themselves. Trees, flowers, and forests are a world of contradictory expressions for the artist – seeming to be frightening and creepy, but at the same time fresh and full of life. The yin and yang of plants, the various expressions of life and the organic, disorderly curves reveal a unique appeal. Inspired by trees, Sakuta creates a distinctive space in her paintings.

The theme of the exhibition revolves around memory and emotion, both of which are uncertain but certainly exist in the world. Sakuta depicts the impulsive emotions with many colors, titling her works with words from novels, lyrics and characters from folk tales and myths. Taking the primitive landscapes of the real world as a starting point, she combines the words that are important to her with the core elements of her painting phase, and depicts the ambiguous images of memories, emotional changes of joy, anger and sadness, and the flow of time by color compositions, thus expanding and developing the floating world of her personal memories. It's about each memory of actual experience, or emotions that people feel nostalgic for a future that didn't come true.

Yuki SAKUTA, born in Aichi, Japan, 1995, graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, oil painting master class. She paints plants such as trees and flowers as her main subject matters. She has won many awards, including FM802 Prize of Rokko Meets Art Art Walk, the 23rd Fukui Kaze Hana Literary Award, Prize of 2019 Kyoto City University of Arts Exhibition, Kyoto Bank Art Collection Scholarship.
