Lin & Lin Gallery is pleased to participate in the ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair 2022. The exhibition will showcase latest artworks by contemporary Chinese artists Zhao Zhao, Shen Liang, and Lai Chiu-Chen, presenting the diverse landscapes of contemporary art in their paintings and exploring the personal reflection of the artists.
Zhao Zhao uses a variety of media to transform realistic subject matters and artistic forms, focusing on the relation between individual consciousness and social sphere in which he lives. Though he constantly challenges traditional ideologies, there is still a poetic aesthetics in his works under the critical aspect. Tradition to the artist is the thing that cannot be abandoned. In contemporary form of creation, the full spirit of traditional aesthetics can still be seen, so that we can always find a profound understanding of traditional cultural aesthetics in Zhao Zhao's works.Shen Liang is like a playwright who writes stories without beginning or end, but does so with painting involved Chinese poetics, image and calligraphy. Under Shen's brush, things which have rarely served as subject matter in traditional Chinese painting are transformed into daily scenes. He presents the most ordinary life scenery like Song Dynasty paintings but in contemporary version and creates a new literati painting context in Eastern culture.
Lai Chiu-Chen's works carry a whiff of pop art. Western pop culture and the aesthetics of Japanese animation seem to appear frequently in his works, but underneath the surface of his cartoon-like images is actually a constant painting proposition —simulation and reproduction. The layer after layer of colors on the canvas and the artistry embedded within the evenly spread interior and the border silhouette express a flat and cold feeling but also a solid and rich material transformation, presenting the artist's personal narrative logic and worldview. And the spiritual expression of oriental culture, which is beyond the painting, is hidden in the layers and layers of the images.
