Art Works to enable viewers a chance to take a glimpse into Hsiao Chin's interiority and a rich life experience.
This exhibition displays various stages of Hsiao's works to manifest the transformation from art to the exploration of the soul, outer space and the universe. The initial 1955-1956 series was composed of Chinese Opera figures as the primary subjects, and displayed deliberately simplified figures with imposing bright and contrasting colors, and the form possessed an innocent interest. Through these works we can clearly see the enthusiasm of the young artist in creating a personal style from forming a harmony between Eastern and Western cultures. The works produced in the 60s begin from philosophical thinking. Hsiao deliberately relaxes his mind, and the natural flow of the hand goes along with the heart, then the work forms itself. After 1990s, a series of works are created in the name of universe, Milky Way, nebula, light and source. These works are magnificent, ardent and calm, simple and complex, and in the macroscopic view, they are seen even more microscopic. Daoism is nature itself and is between Heaven and Earth, Hsiao expands it from the secular world to the infinite universe, and then returns it to the heart.
Hsiao Chin develops a highly personal style aptly defined by Sam Hunter as a “unique synthesis of East and West.” Hsiao's aesthetic excellence is undoubted, and behind his accomplishment, his life experience is even more fascinating. This exhibition thus displays Hsiao Chin's universal love through his utter innocence, with his paint brush that endows the aesthetic order of the world.
