Lin & Lin Gallery is pleased to present Huang Tsai-Lang's solo exhibition After Lingering in January. “Lingering” describes the emotion that is so deep and lasting that it cannot be separated. For the artist, it further metaphors his unceasing persistence and passion for painting. Through gazing at the daily landscape, Huang Tsai-Liang employs the brief brushwork and thick layers of pigment to create rich textures, depicting a life scene interwoven from watching, temporal memories, and emotions.
The work of juxtaposition of “bold brushwork lines” and “heavy overlapped color blocks” is Huang's unique painting vocabulary. By careful observation and depiction, he uses boneless methods on the floral and planet subjects, such as tangerines, wax apples, kohlrabis, poinsettias, fully demonstrating his color and lighting technique. In the painting, the traces of vigorous lines and texture stroke effect of compressed charcoal pencil are layered with the oil painting pigments to make the audience's gaze wander between charcoal tones and vibrant hues. The appropriate negative space in the background not only creates distance and depth between objects, but also integrates with the sentiment of freehand brushwork. In contrast of colors, this seemingly unfinished work but reserves the strong and understated visual tension.
On the other hand, the gold foil added to the painting becomes a bright spot. The poinsettia's bright red leaves and various shapes cut gold foil glow in harmony with each other, evoking a vibrant festive atmosphere. Or perhaps it is the contrast between dazzling gold foil and darker charcoal lines, the gold foil sets off the kohlrabis, making them more vivid and eye-catching. Gray-black gradient lines overlapped with oil painting and combined with the material properties of pencil and compressed charcoal pencil. While shaping the objects, various textures were layered to create an ethereal beauty that mixes fantasy and reality. Moreover, in the composition of the scene, as the viewing perspective shifts, it becomes evident that the artist's depiction of the still-life landscape has gradually transitioned from a level gaze to an upward-looking composition, thereby creating distinct layers of visual depth.
In this exhibition, the works presented span the artist's early career, were created during fragmented moments between busy schedules in the 1980s and 1990s and also were created in recent years after transitioning to full-time work following retirement, presenting the trace of his artistic works over an extended period. Reviewing his works from different periods, the artist has consistently maintained a focus on subjects drawn from the visible scenes of life. Through repeated depictions under varying temporal and spatial conditions, the works gradually transcended mere representational sketching. Under the flow of time and the sedimentation of memory, these seemingly tranquil landscapes and still life are transformed into spaces that bear emotional and viewing experiences, embodying the artist's profound contemplation of all things.
